weldon henson – weldon henson’s honky tonk frontier – cd packaging
art director/designer: rob story, illustration: eric bowman
weldon wanted the art to feel like an old western movie poster. funds were tight, but my friend (and frequent collaborator), eric bowman stepped up and did a knockout job of illustrating the concept. in the end we didn’t stick to the illustrative look of the old 60s posters, but we did end up with a great piece that, i think, got us where weldon wanted us to be. the art takes us on a walk through history by showing us a contemporary honky tonk scene (on the outside) and a historic (old west) saloon scene on the inside. weldon remains in the center of it all suggesting his music is rooted in a timeless honky tonk world. the typography and title were born out of several conversations we had about the movie poster vibe that weldon wanted to convey.
below are some of eric’s sketches for the project. because i tend to think it’s cool to see the evolution of the art.
